Professional applied ecology practice is a young industry sector with a rapidly developing market and complex regulation in the form of legislations.
Paul Bradley, Managing Director, identified that much of the sector is served by sole-traders with little or no quality assurance accreditation, or small units within multidisciplinary businesses where quality systems might not be specific to this sector. Paul explained;
“I needed to be able to demonstrate clear evidence of the demanding quality standards that we work to. After some deliberation we decided that achieving ISO 9001 would provide real benefit in realising our ambitious business growth target.”
PBA crucially needed to provide evidence that a systematic approach to the delivery of quality to a commonly recognised standard underpinned all that they did. ISO 9001 would differentiate PBA from competitors, and ensure the company was capable of delivering the high quality of service demanded by clients. Paul explained;
“Our cost benefit analysis immediately that showed us immediately that the challenges for us, in terms of time and cost posed by seeking assessment, were far outweighed by the opportunities that would open up.”
Paul revealed exactly why he chose the British Assessment Bureau (BAB);
“We did a lot of research into the best organisation to partner with in achieving ISO 9001 certification, and BAB was by far the most responsive, supportive and cost effective.”
Whilst the idea of an audit can be daunting, the reality is that many businesses are doing plenty of good things already – it’s just the processes aren’t formalised. Paul recalls;
“We’d already put so much effort into formalising our internal policies, processes and procedures and it was gratifying to learn that these were largely consistent with the demands of ISO. Our experience of the audit was entirely constructive and fully met our expectations.”
PBA now find themselves on par in terms of guaranteed quality of service with clients many times their size in terms of company value and headcount. They are now able to provide validated evidence that services, no matter how complex and challenging they may be, will always be delivered to the highest agreed standard and that projects will be progressed at least to time and budget targets. Paul summarised;
“As a direct consequence of refining our quality management systems in line with ISO 9001, we’ve been able to bring a recent project to conclusion a year ahead of schedule making valuable cost savings for both the principle contractor and our client.”
“We have seen our client base grow, and have secured considerable repeat business from demanding existing clients.”
To conclude, Paul summed up the value of ISO 9001 certification to the organisation, as they are now able to tender for more work as a result;
“Above all we can now demonstrate that effective and efficient ecology services underpinned by a systematic approach to quality are a benefit rather than a cost.”
