Inevitably, this is the key question when first looking into what it takes to attain certification to the Quality Management standard.
The issue is that cost can be affected by multiple factors, together with the level of support you believe you need. We’ll delve into that shortly, but for now, let’s deal directly with the question.
What influences the cost?
The main factors are:
- Your industry (and resulting complexity)
- Amount of sites
- The output of those sites
- Amount of employees
These factors influence how much Auditing time is required, and therefore the overall cost. Regardless of experience, the process is the same. It involves an initial ‘Stage 1 Audit’ to see how you perform against the requirements of ISO 9001, followed by a second ‘Stage 2 Audit’ once you’ve had time to make sure you’ve filled any gaps.
A sampling process is allowed, so if you have multiple sites all doing the same activities, they would be visited on a rotation basis. Similarly, you are not penalised by having hundreds of staff doing the exact same role (e.g. a call centre operation).

Can I really do it alone?
Many of our clients implement ISO 9001 with no prior experience and achieve certification without a hitch. Our client Fitnut is one such example, and they declared it “the best thing that we have ever done for our business.”
This is great news, particularly as this makes it the cheapest route to certification. ISO 9001 isn’t rocket science – the key is whether you have the resource to be able to implement the standard, whilst still doing your day job.
The reality is most of our clients don’t have the luxury of a dedicated ‘Quality Manager’. Fortunately, this isn’t a necessity – you just need someone with a good understanding of the business to be responsible. Ideally, you’d have a small team to share the load, and help with gaining wider engagement, as this makes implementation far easier.
If you are under pressure to get ISO 9001 certified quickly, or do have a real issue with resource, then a consultant can be the right route; their experience will add value and invariably speed up the process – at a cost.

What’s the recommended approach?
We respect that many clients need certification in order to gain access to important contracts. However, it’s important to note that implementing ISO 9001 should save you money, as long as you approach it in the right way. ISO 9001 presents an opportunity to:
- Find gaps in your processes
- Reduce mistakes and re-work
- Improve your service to clients
- Improve internal communication
- Define responsibilities
Efficiency yields time and cost savings, so integrating ISO 9001 into your strategy shouldn’t cost you anything at all. Those that find ISO 9001 expensive tend be those that have not integrated the standard into their day-to-day. Instead, it becomes a burden, as it continues to be something they have to do in addition to their job.

Where does your money go?
For simplicity, we always quote a Fixed Fee. To help with cash flow, we also split the cost. We’re able to do this as we employ all of our Auditors and – as such – have full control over our costs. As a result, you don’t need to watch out for any travel or administration costs tucked into the small print.
We pride ourselves on providing a solution for smaller organisations to achieve certification first time, with no previous experience. Not only do we aim to add value wherever possible during Audits, all clients benefit from our template ‘toolkit’ which enables them to get started on building their ISO 9001 management system.
For added assurance, all Auditing work is checked and signed off by our compliance team. It’s this comprehensive approach which results in us being a bona fide UKAS accredited Certification Body. As a result, this sign of quality means your certificate is recognised anywhere.
