The Process The Process

ARE YOU NEW TO ISO 14001? NO PROBLEM! WE TAKE 1,000s OF ORGANISATIONS THROUGH THE CERTIFICATION PROCESS EVERY YEAR.

STEP 1 – PREPARATION

Ahead of the first visit, purchasing a copy of the ISO 14001 standard will reveal the requirements you will need to meet in order to achieve certification.

We know you’ll want to feel prepared, so your Assessor will be in touch to introduce themselves and gain an understanding of your organisation so that you get the most out of your first assessment.

STEP 2 – FIRST ASSESSMENT

The aim of the ‘Stage 1 Assessment’ is to establish your current position so that you create an effective Environmental Management System, suitable to meet the requirements of ISO 14001.

Whilst we’re not permitted to provide consultancy – so that we maintain impartiality – the unique template toolkit we have developed makes certification achievable with no previous experience.

STEP 3 – SECOND ASSESSMENT

When you confirm everything is in place, a date is booked for your ‘Stage 2 Assessment’ with your Assessor.

Whilst your Assessor can recommend you for certification, the audit report must be reviewed by our compliance team before your certificate and logo is officially issued. We’re then on hand to help you shout about achievement to the world!

STEP 4 – ANNUAL ASSESSMENT

The reason certification to ISO standards is so respected is that there is a requirement to commit to continuously improving environmental performance. Every year, you must be re-assessed to demonstrate you still comply.

We’ll be in touch in good time to provide you with a quotation, which will be less than half of the cost to achieve initial certification.

It has different elements and over the next 3 years all businesses will be transferred over to the 2015 standard as their certification is renewed. • We’d love to help with consultancy, but as a certification company we’re not allowed to because there would be a conflict of interest if we were to certify the work we had done for you.

  • You don’t have to use a consultant to achieve certification. In fact, most of our clients don’t use one. But if you’d like to use a consultant, that’s absolutely fine. If you need help in locating an ISO consultant we’d be happy to help - just give us a call on 0800 404 7007.

  • Most of our clients have no prior experience of ISO, nor anything in place before they started on their journey. ISO standards aren’t intended to change the way your organisation does things: merely benchmark against recognised best practice. In reality most organisations are doing lots of good things already; they just need formalising.

Why is ISO 14001 so popular? Why is ISO 14001 so popular?

There’s no doubt that many businesses choose to become ISO 14001 certified, but many more are forced to achieve certification in order to access new work, or retain existing business. The certification also improves internal processes, creates more efficient systems, and reduces costs and waste.

Why choose ISO 14001? Why choose ISO 14001?

Because of the demand for ISO 14001 by central government and local authorities, it’s unsurprising that most organisations want to implement ISO 14001 because it gives them a greater chance of winning tenders for contracts. In fact, some organisations say they simply would not have been eligible to tender without it.

How long does certification take? How long does certification take?

The ISO 14001 certification can take longer depending on the size of the organisation. In order to be successful, a designated representative should take responsibility within your company. However, this doesn’t mean you have to appoint a designated ‘Environmental Manager’ - just someone who is seen as the main coordinator would usually be sufficient.

ISO 14001 History

ISO 14001 is a series of international standards on environmental management. It provides a framework for the development of an environmental management system and the supporting audit programme. Here is a brief history of the ISO 14001 to date, from its early beginnings to the current format.

1991

Due to rapid acceptance of ISO 9000 and increase of environmental standards around the world, the International Standards Organisation (ISO) assessed the need for international environmental management standards. They formed the Strategic Advisory Group on the Environment (SAGE), to consider whether such standards could serve to:

  1. Promote a common approach to environmental management similar to quality management
  2. Enhance organisations’ ability to attain and measure improvements in environmental performance
  3. Facilitate trade and remove trade barriers.
1992

The ISO 14001 series emerged as a result of the Uruguay round of the GATT negotiations and the Rio Summit on the Environment. SAGE’s recommendations created a new committee, TC 207, for international environmental management standards. This committee and its sub-committees included representatives from industry, standards organisations, government and environmental organisations from many countries.

Standards covered:

  1. Environmental management systems
  2. Environmental auditing
  3. Environmental performance evaluation
  4. Environmental labelling
  5. Life-cycle assessment
  6. Environmental aspects in product standards
1996

ISO 14001 was first published as a standard. It specifies the actual requirements for an environmental management system and applies to those environmental aspects over which an organisation has control and where it can be expected to have an influence.

Seen as the cornerstone standard of the ISO 14000 series. Other standards in the ISO 14001 series are actually guidelines, many to help an organisation achieve registration to ISO 14001.

2015

Latest version of ISO 14001 was published in September 2015, in line with ISO’s commitment to review their standards regularly and ensure they remain recognised as best practice. Update enhanced requirements covering leadership and communication. Introduction of new concepts such as lifecycle ‘cradle to grave’ thinking.
