Introducing the beginner's guide to the popular ISO 14001 environmental management standard. Learn more about what ISO 14001 is all about and its benefits.ISO 14001 for beginners
British Assessment Bureau is the UK’s number one choice for ISO 14001 Certification.
Since 1969 we have provided our clients with an award-winning service based on confidence and trust.
Our UKAS accreditation is a key part of the confidence we can guarantee our clients. Our accredited ISO 14001 certificates all come with the coveted ‘Crown & Tick’ mark, underlining the security that only comes from Government-backed certification
STEP 1 – PREPARATION
We know you’ll want to feel prepared, so your Assessor will be in touch to introduce themselves and gain an understanding of your organisation so that you get the most out of your first assessment.
STEP 2 – FIRST ASSESSMENT
The aim of the ‘Stage 1 Assessment’ is to establish your current position so that you create an effective Environmental Management System, suitable to meet the requirements of ISO 14001.
Whilst we’re not permitted to provide consultancy – so that we maintain impartiality – the unique template toolkit we have developed makes certification achievable with no previous experience.
STEP 3 – SECOND ASSESSMENT
When you confirm everything is in place, a date is booked for your ‘Stage 2 Assessment’ with your Assessor.
Whilst your Assessor can recommend you for certification, the audit report must be reviewed by our compliance team before your certificate and logo is officially issued. We’re then on hand to help you shout about achievement to the world!
STEP 4 – ANNUAL ASSESSMENT
The reason certification to ISO standards is so respected is that there is a requirement to commit to continuously improving environmental performance. Every year, you must be re-assessed to demonstrate you still comply.
We’ll be in touch in good time to provide you with a quotation, which will be less than half of the cost to achieve initial certification.
WHAT WILL IT COST?
The cost of certification is ultimately determined by factors such as the organisation’s total size, the sector it’s in, and the number of locations they operate from. Regardless of your size, we always provide a fixed fee with no hidden costs to worry about. To make budgeting your ISO requirements a little easier, we offer a monthly payment plan as standard to all registered companies, charities and organisations*. If this option is taken an initial payment of only 20% is required with the balance payable over 10 monthly direct debit payments. Alternatively, if you wish to pay the full fee up front a 10% discount will be applied.
*Credit check is not required subject to confirmation of company registration, minimum 6 months trading history and self-certification of solvency. This option is not available to sole traders due to consumer regulations.
So you can take immediate advantage, we can provide a Letter of Commitment once you begin the process. You’ll be introduced to your Assessor who is with you throughout the process, together with your Account Manager. With our free template toolkits and online training, this approach has allowed 1,000s achieve hassle-free certification in just a few months.

ISO has updated the core requirements for ISO 14001 with the 2015 revisions of the standard. ISO 14001:2008 certificate holders have three years to transition to the new standard. Call our award-winning team on 0800 404 7007 to find out how to get certified to the latest standard.
As of 15th September 2018 ISO 14001:2008 certificates will no longer be valid.
Of course. Just give our customer services team a call on 0800 404 7007 and we can give you a quotation.
This depends on how many ISO standards you are trying to achieve. On average, it takes our clients 3 – 6 months to get certified.
We’d love to help with consultancy, but as a certification company we’re not allowed to because there would be a conflict of interest if we were to certify the work we had done for you.
You don’t have to use a consultant to achieve certification. In fact, most of our clients don’t use one. But if you’d like to use a consultant, that’s absolutely fine. If you need help in locating an ISO consultant we’d be happy to help - just give us a call on 0800 404 7007.
Most of our clients have no prior experience of ISO, nor anything in place before they started on their journey. ISO standards aren’t intended to change the way your organisation does things: merely benchmark against the recognised best practice. In reality, most organisations are doing lots of good things already; they just need formalising.
