“Once the implementation process was structured, it was very clear we were already doing much of what was required for certification, and that with small changes we could improve our practices further.”
Hi-Tec Building Services carry out all aspects of building maintenance and full refurbishments.
Lynsey McClelland, Administrative Manager at HTBS, initiated the implementation of the Quality Management, Environmental Management and Health and Safety Management Standards after learning more and more of their existing and potential contractors were requesting certification;
Some of our major clients were requesting that contractors be ISO certified. After doing research we decided that we should go for it with the three standards – ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.
Once Lynsey had decided on the standards Hi-Tec should implement, she needed to choose a Certification Body to work with. She explained her reasons for choosing the British Assessment Bureau;
I did some independent research, but also asked some companies we know for advice, with many of them recommending the British Assessment Bureau for certification.
As a small company, HTBS found the process daunting from the outset as they didn’t know how to begin formalising their processes. Lynsey explained how working with a consultant benefitted them;
Luckily we worked with a very supportive consultant who helped us to focus, so that implementation flowed smoothly and easily.
As Lynsey and the team began working on implementing the management systems, it became clear that a lot of what they were already doing fit into the requirements of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001;
Once the implementation process was structured, it was very clear we were already doing much of what was required for certification, and that with small changes we could improve our practices further.
BAB offers each client an excellent service, and the Audit process is no exception;
Our Auditor was very thorough but also approachable and gave us some good advice on how we could improve and make our documentation work more efficiently for us.
Thanks to their determination and hard work while implementing the standards, HTBS were formally awarded their certifications in record time;
The highlight was achieving realism we had met all of the requirements to the three standards at our Stage 1 Audit, which we weren’t expecting at all! As a small company, we always just worked hard and got on with things – but this was a huge boost to our confidence and staff morale.
As a result of becoming certified, HTBS have already experienced several benefits;
We have greater opportunities and can now apply for larger tenders and projects that we may not have been able to do before.
Lynsey concluded with how the ISO and OHSAS standards will continue to help the business improve and develop;
The continual internal audit process and additional staff meetings that we have help to focus and direct our attention on developing new systems and ideas, which in turn increases our professional reputation and profitability.
