THE CHALLENGE

After trading for 3 years, Coral Tool’s Director Matt Page decided the next business aim was to become ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified and for the standards to become an integral part of what they do – demonstrating to customers that their products were fit for purpose. Responsiveness was key for Coral Tools, as they wanted to implement the standards in minimal time, Matt commented;

“One of our USP’s is that we are nimble and quick. Other certification bodies I contacted took so long to come back to us [with information], and BAB came back straight away – it was very easy.”

THE SOLUTION

Coral Tools sought to demonstrate to their existing and potential clients that they had earnest credibility through achieving ISO 9001 for Quality Management, and ISO 14001 for Environmental Management. Matt spoke about his Stage 1 audit, which identified how the organisation had to implement the processes in order to become certified;

“I really enjoyed the experience – I enjoyed the dialogue, the interaction, it was very friendly and approachable. It was like a replication of the company that we try to be, which made it a pleasant experience.”

BAB’s aim is to be pragmatic and supportive of businesses throughout the ISO journey, as the purpose of achieving the standards is to ultimately help businesses. Matt commented on his relationship with the Auditor from the off;

“We were able to develop a relationship with them almost instantly. We felt completely at ease with them. You might think you just want to get the audit over and done with as soon as possible but that wasn’t our experience at all. We felt like she had all the time in the world for us and that she wanted the best for our business – that came across loud and clear. It was an enjoyable experience!”

THE RESULTS

Matt shared his thoughts how becoming ISO certified has allowed Coral Tools to compete against the bigger businesses in the industry;

“There is still the disadvantage that we are only a 3-year old business who might not have much of a chance. Therefore, the minute we say we are certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, it opens doors for us. We have credibility and we are entitled to play in the bigger leagues. We are now perceived to be more established and credible.”

“Even though our patents have merit in their own right, it’s only together with the certifications that we are able to open those doors.”

Being one of the first organisations in the UK to be certified to the fully UKAS accredited ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 standards gives the company an even greater competitive edge. Matt explains how it was all made possible thanks to the ISO toolkits provided to Coral Tools by BAB;

“The toolkit was great – if you follow it then you won’t forget or miss anything out. Without it, everything would have taken an awful lot longer. I honestly don’t know how I would have gone about it without the toolkit!”

Reflecting on his ISO journey, Matt explained;

“The highlight was not feeling that it was the assessor and us, it felt like we were in it together; on the same side. Also having the opportunity for on going support via email or phone – that was really important for us.”
