The British Assessment Bureau are pleased to be confirmed as official supporters of BOHS’ (The Chartered Society for Worker Health Protection) ‘Breathe Freely’ campaign. Breathe Freely works to control and reduce exposures to prevent occupational lung disease in the construction industry.
Construction workers are at high risk of contracting lung disease from the work that they do. In 2015, it was predicted that approximately 3,500 would die from cancer caused by past exposures to asbestos, 500 more from silica dust, and another 5,500 would be diagnosed with occupational cancer. Today alone, a significant number will breathe in the hazardous substances that will one day seriously affect their health, and ultimately their quality of life.
- The UK construction industry has the largest number of reported cases of occupational lung disease of any industrial sector;
- Occupational cancers of the respiratory system cause more than 7,000 deaths a year;
- 3,500 occupational cancer deaths are caused by exposures in construction;
- Some of the most common substances known to cause occupational asthma are used in or generated by everyday construction tasks (isocyanates, solder and colophony fumes, stainless steel welding fumes, and wood dusts.)
Breathe Freely is a collaborative initiative led by BOHS in partnership with key organisations within the construction industry. It provides guidance, tools and resources that facilitate the recognition, evaluation and control of workplace exposures leading to the implementation of a recognised management standard.
Why BAB are getting involved
Here at the British Assessment Bureau, we’re on a mission to make sure businesses are safer and ‘greener’. Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001) and Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSAS 18001) help businesses operate more effectively and efficiently. This results in safer and more environmentally friendly work places; with happier, healthier, and more productive workforces.
In the end, if businesses are safer, environmentally friendly, and put their employee’s health and wellbeing at the core of their vales, then we have succeeded!
While extensive research over the past few years has proven that green standards and schemes, such as ISO 14001 and BOHS’ Breath Freely campaign, have improved communication and promotes collaborative work – all conducive to creating a more productive, safer workplace.
We are extremely proud to support the BOHS Breath Freely campaign and believe standards must continue to rise in the construction industry.
